The horrific terror attack in Nice has led to the standard and fully appropriate expressions of outrage and defiance. But what we haven’t heard is any real policy to combat these attacks, even indirectly.
Newt Gingrich has proposed rounding up every Muslim, having them tell us if they believe in Sharia law, and deporting all who do. His proposal is as antithetical to our values, Constitution, and rule of law as it gets. One wonders why a man with so little common sense and understanding of our country is paid the least bit of attention. Of course, the same question applies to Mr. Trump.
Rather than undermining our own country’s values and democracy, our response to the ongoing terror attacks inspired or directed by ISIS and other terror organizations should be direct and shift – to wipe out those organizations, which are a scourge on humanity.
Consider ISIS. It is well dispersed and, like Al Qaeda, we will never be able to eradicate all its members. But we can humiliate and weaken ISIS, as well as undermine its psychological hold on formal and informal members. How? By evicting it from every major city in Syria and Iraq that it controls.
The largest such city is Mosul. We’re I President, I would be organizing, together with the Iraqi Army, the French, the British, the Germans, the Italians, the Turks, the Saudis, the Kuwaitis, the Emirates, and all our other NATO members, as well as Russia, the immediate liberation of Mosul. If this requires major deployment of U.S. and foreign ground troops, they should be deployed.
Every time a terror attack is launched by ISIS or by someone ISIS has inspired, ISIS must pay a major and immediate price. This must, however, be done without unduly jeopardizing the safety of innocent civilians. Yes, this is a difficult equation to solve. But these attacks cannot go unanswered. Leaving them unanswered is a sign of weakness that will invite even more attacks. In short, we must take the battle to the enemy, but do so on our terms, not theirs.
